Bluesky founders and employees
Bluesky was a research project initially started in 2019 by Jack Dorsey when he was CEO of Twitter, eventually becoming an independent company in 2021. Following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in 2022, the two companies went their separate ways and Bluesky became available as an invite-only service in February 2023. Dorsey left Bluesky’s board in May 2024.
According to a post by CEO Jay Graber, Bluesky had just 20 full-time employees as of November 2024, meaning the platform had roughly one million users per employee at the time.
Jack Dorsey
Jack Dorsey is an American businessman, best known as a co-founder of Twitter which he created in March 2006 alongside Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams. Dorsey became CEO of Twitter in 2015 and remained until 2021 when he announced his resignation. He left the board of directors at Twitter in May 2022, a few months before the platform was sold to Elon Musk.
Dorsey joined the board of directors at Bluesky in February 2022 and announced his departure from the board in May 2024.
Jay Graber
Jay Graber is a software engineer and has been the CEO of Bluesky since August 2021. Her background includes time at bitcoin mining and cryptocurrency companies, and her net worth is an estimated $5 million.
Number of Bluesky users
As of January 2025, Bluesky has 27.44 million registered users. The platform hit 20 million registered users in November 2024, doubling its user numbers compared to September 2024 (10 million).

Number of Bluesky downloads by month
The number of downloads Bluesky has received from the Google Play Store and the App Store has fluctuated since its official launch in February 2023. However, downloads saw a significant spike between September and December 2024 with peak downloads of 7.85 million in November 2024.
This surge in downloads coincided with huge swathes of users leaving X (formerly Twitter) amid concerns about the platform since Elon Musk’s takeover in 2022. These concerns include the scaling back of content moderation, an increase in content posted by bots, and rising levels of bigotry and negativity being shared on X.

Bluesky raised $8 million in its initial seed round in July 2023, following its invite-only beta lunch in February 2023. The company then raised a further $15 million in its Series A funding round in October 2024, amounting to a total of $23 million in funding so far.
The Series A round was led by Blockchain Capital and also included Alumni Ventures, Seven X, Amir Shevat of Darkmode and, co-creator of Kubernetes, Joe Beda.

What technology does Bluesky use?
Bluesky is a decentralised social media app, meaning it runs on a network of computers rather than one central server. This means Bluesky is controlled by the users rather than a single authority.
It is built on an open source protocol called the AT Protocol, meaning people outside the company can see how it is built and how it is being developed.
Bluesky reportedly plans to adopt federation, whereby multiple separately operated communities can exist as part of the open source network. For example, another developer outside of the Bluesky company could build a new social app using the AT protocol, and users port their existing Bluesky followers and data to this new app.
Bluesky moderation features
In December 2023, the Bluesky Safety account posted an announcement detailing a number of moderation updates. These updates included “more advanced automated tooling” in order to flag content found to be in violation of its Community Guidelines. These reports are then sent to Bluesky’s moderation team for review.
Bluesky also has moderation features like the option to users to block or mute certain accounts. The app does not yet give users the option to make their profiles private although many users have requested this feature.
In October 2023, Bluesky added a feature to warn users of links that may be misleading by showing a warning if a user clicks on a potentially dubious link.
